FAQ

Everything you need to know about League of Words — rules, scoring, streaks, and more.

How the Game Works

Green means the letter is in the secret word and in exactly the right position. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position. Gray means the letter does not appear in the word at all.

Use these clues together to narrow down the answer with each guess.

Yes. Letters can appear more than once — for example, SLEEP has two E's. The tile colors reflect exactly how many times each letter appears and where, so pay attention when you see multiple yellows or grays for the same letter.

Any real 5-letter English word in our dictionary. Proper nouns, abbreviations, and made-up letter strings are not accepted. If a word is rejected, the board shakes — try a different word.

The board shakes and you'll see a message. The guess does not count against your six attempts — no rows are used.

In Daily Word, each invalid submission deducts 10 points from your score, so it's worth avoiding them.

No. Every answer is a common 5-letter English word from everyday usage. You will never need to guess a name, place, acronym, or abbreviation.

No. League of Words runs entirely in your browser — no sign-up, no login, no subscription required. Your stats and streak are saved automatically in your browser's local storage.

Daily Word

A new word becomes available every day at midnight in your local time zone. If you're mid-game when midnight arrives, your current puzzle completes normally — the fresh word takes effect on your next visit.

Yes. The Daily Word is identical for every player on the same calendar day, everywhere in the world. This is what makes streaks, social sharing, and leaderboards (coming soon) fair and comparable.

No — one attempt per day, by design. The daily limit is what gives the streak its meaning and gives everyone something to talk about.

Your progress is saved automatically. Reopen League of Words and you'll continue from exactly where you left off — same guesses, same board state.

Not currently. Past words are not available for replay. Word Arcade is the best way to get more puzzles any time you want.

Scoring

Your score is based on three things: how many rows you used (fewer = more points), how fast you solved it from your first guess (faster = more points), and whether you submitted invalid words (each one deducts points).

Solving in Hard Mode adds a separate bonus on top.

The theoretical maximum is 1,000 points. Reaching it requires solving in one guess, as fast as possible, with no invalid submissions, and Hard Mode enabled — which is extraordinarily rare.

The timer starts when you submit your first guess. The time bonus decays linearly from its maximum down to zero at 15 minutes. Solving in under a minute earns close to the full time bonus; taking longer gradually reduces it.

No. Wrong guesses using real dictionary words are free — they just use a row. Only invalid word submissions (words not in the dictionary) deduct 10 points each. You're encouraged to guess freely with real words.

Hard Mode requires you to use every revealed hint in all future guesses — green letters must stay in their exact position, and yellow letters must be reused somewhere in every subsequent guess.

Successfully solving in Hard Mode adds a +100 point bonus. Toggle it before your first guess.

Zero. If you use all six guesses without finding the word, your score for that day is 0. Your streak also resets.

Streaks & Stats

Your streak counts the number of consecutive days on which you correctly solved the Daily Word. Playing but failing does not extend your streak — you must solve the word to keep it going.

Two things break your streak: failing to solve the word, or not playing at all on a given day. Missing even one day resets your streak to zero.

Yes. Streaks are all-or-nothing — every single day must be a successful solve. There is no grace period. This is intentional: it keeps the streak a genuinely meaningful achievement.

Everything is saved in your browser's local storage — there are no servers and no accounts involved. This means your stats live on the specific browser and device you use. Clearing browser data or switching to a different browser will start fresh.

Not yet. Cross-device sync requires an account, which is on our roadmap. For now, your streak lives in the browser where you play. We recommend picking one browser and sticking with it.

Word Arcade

Word Arcade is an unlimited game mode where you solve multiple 5-letter words per level, all on a single shared board. Unlike Daily Word, you can play as many levels as you like, any time of day. Levels grow progressively harder as you advance.

The number of words increases as you progress through levels. Early levels have 2–3 words; later levels can require 5 or more. Each level also gives you a larger row pool to balance the increased challenge.

Instead of 6 rows per word, Arcade gives you a shared pool of rows for the entire level. Every guess — whether it leads to a solve or not — uses one row from that pool. The pool is shared across all words, so efficient guessing is rewarded.

The solved word scrolls away and the next target word moves to the top of the board. Some of the letters from your winning guess carry over as hints for the next word, so the board never goes completely blank between words.

The run ends. You'll see your final score and a summary. There's no penalty — each run is a fresh start. Your personal best score is saved.

Arcade scoring is cumulative. Each solved word earns base points depending on how many guesses it took (fewer = more), plus a word difficulty bonus based on letter rarity. At the end of each level, bonus points are added for leftover rows, the level number, and Hard Mode use.

Privacy & Technical

We do not collect personal information. Your game stats are stored locally in your own browser — we never see them. We use anonymous, aggregate analytics to understand general usage patterns. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Visit /clear-storage in your browser. This wipes all locally stored game data including your streak, stats, and game history. This action cannot be undone.

League of Words works in any modern browser — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and their mobile equivalents. We recommend keeping your browser up to date for the best experience.

Yes. The game is fully responsive and works on all screen sizes. For the best mobile experience, open it directly in your mobile browser (Safari, Chrome) rather than an in-app browser like the one inside Instagram or X.

Your stats are stored in the specific browser where you play, not on a server. Switching browsers, clearing browser data, or using a different device will not carry your progress over. Cross-device sync is planned once account support is introduced.
